Apex Woodland & Wildlife Services
Darren and Helen are a husband and wife team, both ex-Army with a combined service of 70 years! They have both been keen deer managers for many years and have decades of coaching and training experience.
When not working, they enjoy the outdoors with their dogs, love to kayak (especially in mackerel season), still enjoy riding motorbikes, and love long walks with good friends to enjoy local food and drink.
I've been studying and managing deer for over 25 years and have been fortunate enough to travel the length and breadth of the UK to experience and professionally manage these incredible and iconic animals.
I started Apex Woodland & Wildlife Services to answer two main Asks:
The first Ask was from landowners, who were experiencing increasing deer numbers, leading to negative impacts on their environments and livelihoods, but were struggling to find the best way to manage the deer in an ethical and sustainable way.
As well as continual professional development in deer impact and conservation, I developed my project management and planning skills during my time as a security expert within National Governmental Agencies, actively working with stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes. I bring this professionalism to ApexWWS and hence to our clients.
The second Ask was cries for help from new stalkers, struggling to work out what to do with their new equipment or to get experience with shooting. Added to that is the increasing professionalisation of deer management with the need to ensure ethical and safe training.
During my time in the UK Armed Forces, I was a competitive biathlete, competing internationally. The skills I developed in the sport directly enhance my ability to coach the high-pressure, precision shooting required in the wildlife management environment.
I have had roles as diverse as Bomb Disposal and motorbike courier, and spent many years as an accredited trainer in a high pressure environment. These skills transfer into my knowledge of coaching, mentoring, risk, solutions and inter-personal relationships.
The team at ApexWWS are all DSC2 qualified and have taken further deer management courses. They are DMQ Approved Witnesses (AWs) and PDS2 Approved Verifiers (AVs), to ensure they drive consistent high standards. All are Range Conducting Officers, with LANTRA shotgun and rifle qualifications, whilst Darren is also a DMQ assessor.
Hi! I'm H.
I've been a deer manager, and mentor for new stalkers for 10 years. I love passing on knowledge and enabling the next generation to be confident, competent and engaged in conservation.
I have had multiple roles over three decades in the British Army. I retrained as a physiotherapist after an injury which curtailed my career, returning fitter and stronger as an Army Physio.
I am commited to helping people to continue enjoying their outdoor activities, and this includes bespoke suggestions for shooting to cope with injuries or other issues.
Helen
